Dr Penny Lim
Dr. Penny Lim is a Specialist Dermatologist with more than 22 years of medical experience. Her interests are skin cancer management, general Dermatology, Dermatopathology, confocal microscopy, and Dermatoscopy.
Dr. Lim graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Malaya, Malaysia, in 1998. As part of her post-graduate training, Dr. Lim completed the Internal Medicine Physician Training with the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (United Kingdom) in 2004.
Dr. Lim commenced clinical Dermatology training in 2005 at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Malaysia. In 2007, she obtained a Fellowship Scholarship Award from the La Roche Posay-Dermatological Society of Singapore for fellowship training at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, Changi Hospital, and Singapore General Hospital.
Dr. Lim received her Advanced Master of Dermatology from the National University of Malaysia in 2009. The same year, she received an Endeavour Executive Award from the Australian Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Aging to work at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (Westmead) and Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia. As a result, Dr. Lim received the Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 2012 after passing the fellowship examination and completing clinical Dermatology training in Westmead Hospital, Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (Westmead), and Rural Dermatology Rotation in Griffith, Bowral, Lismore, Port Macquarie, and Dubbo.
Dr. Lim worked as a Dermatopathology Fellow at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (Darlinghurst) from 2008 to 2010. Under Professor Steven Kossard, she completed a further 2-year Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia Fellowship Program in Dermatopathology from 2010 to 2011. She obtained the International Board Certification in Dermatopathology from the European Union of Medical Specialists in 2011. She also passed the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists professional examination in 2010.
Dr Lim then worked as a clinical Dermatopathologist at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia from 2013 until 2016. In March 2016, Dr Lim was invited to combine her extensive clinical Dermatology commitments with one day per week at Kossard Dermatopathologists, as a Clinical Specialist in Dermatopathology. Under the continuing mentorship of Professor Steven Kossard, she looks forward to leveraging her diagnostic Dermatopathology skills with her clinical Dermatology acumen to deliver the clinically targeted dermatopathology reports characteristic of Kossard Dermatopathologists to her clinical colleagues and their patients.
She was also a visiting medical officer at the Sydney Melanoma Diagnostic Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, from 2014 to 2015. Before setting up Pymble Dermatology, she also worked at three greater Sydney locations; Specialist Dermatology Services (Castle Hill), Chatswood Dermatology Centre and the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (Darlinghurst).
Aside from clinical and Dermatopathology activities, Dr Lim has published and presented various research papers on Dermatology and Dermatopathology in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences. She was also an invited speaker on Dermatoscopy in inflammatory diseases at the Confocal Microscopy: Dermoscopy and Pathological Correlation: Navigate in 3D in the Skin at the Melanoma Institute of Australia in 2015 and the World Congress of Dermatology, Vancouver, Canada, in 2016.
Dr. Lim has been recognised for her outstanding achievements, which include The King Award VII Bronze Medal in Medicine 1998, Best Houseman in General Medicine during her internship year 1998, Award of Excellence in Service by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, 2003, La-Roche Posay- Dermatological Society of Singapore – Fellowship Scholarship Award in 2007, Best Oral Presentation in the 35th Annual Dermatology Conference, Malaysia Dermatological Society 2007, Research Grant from Clinical Research Centre, Malaysia 2007, Best Poster Presentation in The Annual Scientific Meeting, Sydney, Australia, 2008, Endeavour Executive Awards Australia, 2009 and F&E Bauer Foundation Scholarship 2011.
With her extensive professional knowledge in dermatology, she has been invited as a co-examiner for the Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists Examination since 2018. In addition, she was appointed the NSW State Examiner (Member of the Board of Censors) on the National Examiners Committee Board for the Australasian College of Dermatologists in November 2020 for a 5-year tenure period
Besides English, Dr. Lim is also conversant in Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia, Mandarin and Hokkien.
